fertilizer and chemical use Citrus from Florida is known worldwide for quality, and Florida is the largest citrus-producing state in America. Deseret has over 1700 acres of citrus containing approximately 237,000 trees. The mainstay of the groves is the production of juice oranges, mostly Valencias. In addition, the groves produce some fresh varieties such as Navel oranges, Sunburst tangerines and Orlando tangelos.
Consistent with the innovative and sustainable management practices of Deseret, new management practices for production, irrigation, drainage, and fertilization have been implemented. To protect precious and fragile aquifers, Deseret decided years ago to move away from using groundwater to using surface water. We have placed sensors on the tree pesticide sprayers to adjust the spray pattern and prevent excess pesticide spray. Annual soil and nutrient analyses help to adjust and conserve fertilizer use. In addition, high-efficiency irrigation systems are used to conserve water. |
